You may be surprised how Japanese people behave and enjoy in a hot spring.
Today I will explain the basic rules in a hot spring and how you can enjoy it.

1, Basic rules
In Japan, people need to follow some rules to enjoy a hot spring. It may be surprising for you. But if you understand them, it will help you enjoy and feel Japanese culture.
1, Always wash your body with “kake-yu” (pouring water) before entering the hot bath.
2, People with long hair should tie their hair up to keep it out of the bathwater.
3, Do not bring towels into the bath.
4, Do not swim or talk loudly in the bath as it may disturb others.
5, After leaving the bath, make sure to dry your body with a towel.
6, Avoid drinking too much alcohol before taking a bath, as it may cause fainting.
7, Do not use your phone or camera in the changing room or bath.
8, Do not dye your hair or do laundry in the bathroom.
These are very basic rules, and Japanese people can easily recognise whether your behavior is considerate of others.
2, How to enjoy it
There are many ways to have a fantastic experience in a hot spring. Below are my recommendations.
1, Enjoying a view around hot springs.
2, Soaking in a hot spring until your feel hot.
3, Drinking milk coffee and having a chat with local people after taking a hot spring. (if you can speak Japanese, because most of local people can’t speak foreign languages.)
In conclusion, hot spring is a best place to immerse yourself in Japanese traditional culture. So If you follow these rules, you definitely have an amazing experience!!
